Dynamic train composition displays for HiSpeed trains

Since last month real-time travel information of departing HiSpeed trains is shown on displays at Amsterdam Central Station, Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Central Station. The displays are installed on the platforms for the HiSpeed trains in the direction of Brussels and Paris. Besides the real-time departure time and platform, the actual train composition is depicted of the Thalys and Fyra trains.
Any change in the planned order of the carriages is now shown on the displays and does not have to be announced in the stations any more.

The real-time information for these displays is processed by the HP Real-time Information Service. The hardware and software of the displays are provided by Surtronic.

JIT module extended with split functionality

The itineraries of two or more trains, which are schedules as through services or 'wing' trains, can on behalf of travel information be connected to one train.

In some cases such planned connection of trains must be splitted, but the tools to do so were lacking.

In the new release of the Just In Timetable (JIT) module, which is part of the HP Real-time Journey Planner, the split functionality will be added. The new release is scheduled for the first quarter of 2012.

More Test Tools

Recently the toolset for testing HP Real-time Information Services was expanded and implemented at the Dutch Railways (NS). One can now easily test the following functions:

  • Departure Boards
  • Planned and Unplanned Disruptions
  • Stop Information
  • General Journey Planner Information

An example of the Departure Board Test Tool is:

Travel Information Applications by external developers

NS holds large amounts of data regarding planned and actual itinerary, disruptions, maintenance works and station facilities. NS strives to disclose this data to as many software developers as possible to enable them to develop different, innovative travel information applications.

The raw data can be accessed by the so-called NS API (application programming interface) and is allowed to use for applications websites and apps of 3rd parties. The NS API is fully based on and supported by the HP Real-time Travel Information Services.

By now various applications are being developed which make use of the API. An example of an innovative Android application is NS Speak.
With this App the actual departure times and platform for a selected station are read out by the mobile phone.

And with the Spoorkaart webapplication the actual location of trains are plotted on a map.

More examples can be found at the NS website.
